These include failure to thrive, recurrent respiratory symptoms or changes in the epithelial lining of the distal esophagus (Barrett’s esophagus). WebGERD is the most common cause of esophageal strictures. Certain lifestyle changes can help you control GERD and prevent or delay strictures: Avoid spicy, fatty, tomato-based or citrusy foods and caffeinated or carbonated beverages. Don’t drink alcohol.
